The 2nd grade sight words come from Dolch 2nd grade and Fry’s second one-hundred words. The 1st grade words come from Dolch P, Dolch 1st grade, and most of Fry’s first one-hundred words. The Fry sight word lists contain 1,000 of these words from pre-k through 5th-grade levels while the Dolch sight word lists feature 220 words from pre-k through 3rd-grade levels and includes a separate 95-word noun list. We like these checklists for documenting student growth – they are great for adding to student data folders! Sight words are common words kids will encounter in grade-level texts. If a student is in second grade and has mastered the first 500 Fry words, it does not seem to be necessary to offer the student Fry word practice. Simply download and print the sight words list. We’ve also had students in our classrooms who do not need targeted Fry word work. Learning all 1,000 words in the Fry sight word list would equip a child to read about 90 of the words in a typical book, newspaper, or website. Some students might have mastered these words and can begin by practicing the second or third hundred words. Edward Fry developed this expanded list in the 1950s (and updated it in 1980), based on the most common words to appear in reading materials used in Grades 3-9. If you add another 200 words (table 2 and 3), these 300 words represent about 65 of all written material. In addition, the first one hundred words (table 1) represent approximately 50 of all printed material. The first twenty-five words represent about a third of written material. We want our students engaged – working over and over on mastered skills seems like busy work. The sight words noted below are ranked in order of frequency. We don’t like requiring students who have mastered the first hundred words to continue repetitive practice. Not all students need work on the first one hundred words. Many advocates of beginning literacy programs support having their students practice these words to build reading success.We love working on Fry words because it is something very easy to differentiate for your students.
